Loads of Tottenham Hotspur supporters blasted the efforts of Eric Dier against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, with fans calling the England midfielder ‘woeful’ and ‘useless’ for his role in their side’s defeat.
Will this be Mauricio Pochettino's last season at Tottenham?
Dier had been a rarely used option in Mauricio Pochettino’s ranks so far this term, with the 25-year-old only awarded two outings across all competitions (TransferMarkt) heading into the Premier League meeting at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Seagulls clash was also the 40-cap Three Lions international’s first start of the league campaign, as he stepped in to replace Harry Winks in the opening line-up from the side that were thrashed 7-2 at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League during the week.
Corners of the Spurs fanbase are now wishing Pochettino did not hand Dier his first start of the league campaign, though, as his efforts on the south coast were on par with a Sunday League player in the eyes of one supporter, and another questioned if he had ever played football before.
Dier’s game certainly had flaws at the Amex Stadium, as the Cheltenham-born midfielder misplaced a greater percentage of his passes than any other Tottenham man managed, with 25% of his 51 attempted balls failing to find a teammate, according to data collected by WhoScored.
The Sporting CP product was also dispossessed once, but won the most aerial duels (3), completed the second-most tackles (4), second-most clearances (2) and third-most interceptions (1) of any Spurs player, as the North Londoners fell to a 3-0 defeat for their third loss of the league campaign.
But loads of Tottenham fans were clearly left underwhelmed, going by some of the messages shared on social media…
We all wanted Dier back and now we can see why he hasn’t been picked. Christ he looks like someone that’s picked out of the crowd

This has been painful to watch. A complete and utter car crash from minute one. No fight. No desire. No quality. No interest. Dier has looked like a Sunday league player at best. Truly embarrassing right across the board. #THFC

Guess we know why Dier wasn’t in the side sooner! Not been what I expected so far!
