The Ballon d’Or winner was announced last night, with Lionel Messi winning the award for a record sixth time in his career (BBC Sport).
However, that wasn’t the talking point amongst supporters of Tottenham Hotspur with many left reeling after it was announced that Son Heung-min had finished lower than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the rankings.
Should Mourinho bother trying to keep Toby Alderweireld?
Indeed, the Arsenal striker was ranked 20th in the list for the prestigious award, whilst Son was two places lower in 22nd (francefootball.fr).
The South Korean was instrumental in Spurs’ run to the UEFA Champions League final last season, scoring four goals en-route to Madrid including three against Manchester City in an epic quarter-final tie (Transfermarkt).
Added to that, he also contributed domestically and in total he finished with 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions in the 2018/19 season (Transfermarkt).
Aubameyang also had an excellent season for Arsenal, however, and managed to win the Premier League Golden Boot alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah with 22 goals (premierleague.com).
That achievement was enough to see him finish ahead of Son in the Ballon d’Or rankings, but several Spurs fans believe that it is ridiculous that the South Korean was below the Gabonese striker.
Here is what some had to say about it on Twitter…

Auba didn’t even win the African player of the year. Surely Son, the two time Asian player of the year should be ahead of him.
