Tottenham Hotspur secured their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday by beating Championship outfit Middlesbrough 2-1 at home.
It was a largely positive evening for Spurs, with several of their players producing solid performances. Indeed, Giovani Lo Celso bagged and Joseph Tanganga continued his upward trajectory with a performance highly-rated by the Guardian. However, quite a few fans were not impressed with how midfielder Eric Dier played in the match.
The England international was not at his best in the game, losing possession on 14 occasions whilst also winning just 50% of his ground and aerial duels and making just one tackle (SofaScore).
The 26-year-old was initially a regular when Jose Mourinho took charge, starting in seven of the Portuguese’s first nine matches (Transfermarkt). However he has lost his place of late and his only two starts in their last six games have been the two FA Cup ties against Middlesbrough (Transfermarkt).
Performances like this aren’t likely to help him regain his place in Mourinho’s starting 11 and plenty of fans were quick to criticise the ex-Sporting Lisbon man’s display on Twitter after the game. Here is what some had to say…
Dier 🙈 so so bad. Under no pressure and his passing was horrific. Fitness is one issue but his passing the last few appearances has been at an all time low.

What about Dier? He is dreadful

Terrible isn’t he? Just doesn’t even have a touch anymore

He honestly looks like he’s running in treacle…. he looks a lean 12 stone but moves like he’s 20…

Absolute horror show from him again. Not even a championship standard him now.

His passing tonight was shocking.

You’ll do well to find a worse footballer than Eric Dier
