Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld has shared his ’emotional’ memories of playing at White Hart Lane on the three-year-anniversary since the ground closed for the very last time.
Alderweireld tweeted photos from the final game at the stadium with the caption: “An emotional send off for White Hart Lane. As a player in that final game you could really feel what the place meant to you guys and it is a stadium where I too enjoyed some special moments.”
He then asked fans to give their thoughts on Spurs’ old home.
Once he arrived in North London from Atletico Madrid (via a loan spell at Southampton) for £14.4m in 2015, the Belgian international established himself as a favourite under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, going on to make 172 appearances for the Argentine.
The 31-year-old famously won La Liga with Los Rojiblancos, as well as lifting the Eredivisie trophy four times with Ajax. His market value is currently estimated at £21.6m via Transfermarkt.
Who is the best Tottenham Hotspur defender of the Daniel Levy era?
As football writer Alasdair Gold notes, White Hart Lane was a key part of the North London landscape for over 100 years, and will always be fondly remembered by supporters, despite the impressive architecture of the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Predictably, plenty of Spurs fans raved over Alderweireld’s “amazing” tweet, with one fan dubbing him a “king” and another adding he is a “legend.”

I didn’t go there very much, unfortunately, but one game I did manage to see was Spurs vs Monaco in the 2015 UEFA League, where Eric Lamela scored a hat-trick in the first half. The place was rocking, and I’ve never been anywhere before or since that felt that amazing.

@AlderweireldTob My wife and I flew from South Africa to be at that game. The emotions are unmeasurable. Invading the pitch and the rainbow over WHL were the highlights for me. I’m holding a South African flag in the middle of this pic. 📸 By @phly_pravanya pic.twitter.com/Cd9WSDobBN
