Some Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting to a tweet that was recently posted by Spurs-focused Twitter account @thespursweb, who have shared some footage of a disallowed Jan Vertonghen goal.
‘Goal’ recently posted a tweet asking their followers what the “worst refereeing decision”(they’ve) ever seen” is. @thespursweb subsequently responded to this post via a tweet of their own in which they shared this disallowed Vertonghen goal from a 2-1 Spurs win over Sunderland in the 2014/15 Premier League campaign.
As the footage in this tweet shows, Vertonghen was deemed to have been offside when he received the ball before going on to score this goal, despite the replays showing that the Belgium international was actually inside his own half at the time that the pass was originally played to him.
According to FIFA’s official website, a player can’t be in an offside position when they are inside their “own half of the field of play”. As a result, this offside decision was incorrect.
As reported by the BBC in their post-match report of this game, Spurs’ manager at the time, Mauricio Pochettino, made his feelings known regarding this offside call, stating that he “thought the officials got confused”, before going on to declare that Vertonghen’s goal should have stood.
Some Spurs supporters have been reacting to @thespursweb’s recent post featuring this footage, sharing their disbelief at the goal being disallowed. Read the reactions of some Tottenham fans to this footage in the tweets below.
