Tottenham Hotspur have triggered their option to extend the contract of defender Japhet Tanganga, that is according to a report from The Athletic via Ricky Sacks.
The 20-year-old’s current deal is set to expire this summer (Transfermarkt), but the report suggests that Spurs have now taken up the option to extend it so that it now runs out in July 2021. It is also reported that the north London outfit will now look to begin negotiations regarding a brand new, long-term contract for the defender.
Tanganga has only recently broken into the first team, with Jose Mourinho handing him starts in each of their last two games against Liverpool in the Premier League and against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup (Transfermarkt).
It is fair to say that he has impressed in both games, particularly against Boro when he made three interceptions, two tackles and one clearance in the 90 minutes whilst also playing one key pass and creating one big chance (SofaScore).
He certainly looks like one for the future and understandably Spurs fans are delighted to hear that his contract will no longer expire in the summer, with many now urging the club to tie him down long-term. Here is how some reacted after reading the update on Twitter…
