Ajax are considering making an approach for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen in the summer transfer window, according to a report from The Independent.
The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and, having not yet been offered a new deal by Spurs, he looks likely be available on a free transfer. Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has refused to rule out the possibility of the Belgian rejoining the club he left in 2012 when he moved to Tottenham.
Indeed, he told Ziggo Sport (via The Independent): “Jan has a history at Ajax. Of course we are following his situation very closely, but you also have to look at the position in which someone plays.
Is Jan Vertonghen past it?
“If that comes together, the availability and the position in which he plays, then he is an option.”
Vertonghen has been in and out of the Spurs line-up in recent weeks and was on the bench for their last Premier League fixture against Manchester City (Transfermarkt), with the younger duo of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga preferred in the defence.
It seems that most Spurs fans would be happy to see Vertonghen leave at the end of the campaign, with the majority insisting that a return to Ajax would be the best thing for him. Meanwhile, one even cheekily suggested that Tottenham should try and get Hakim Ziyech to move in the opposite direction, though that seems unlikely with rivals Chelsea closing in on a deal. Here is what some had to say about it on Twitter…
I think this would be best for everyone, he has sadly lost that yard of pace that made him the defender he was but also he deserves to go and be a regular with Ajax and not just a bit part player with us

Would be sad to see him go, I love Jan, but the move makes sense and would be good for him. Will need replacing and those are big boots to fill.
