Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn after it was confirmed by the Dutch side’s manager Ernest Faber that the winger was given permission to talk to the Premier League outfit.
The 22-year-old was left out of the PSV squad for their game against FC Twente on Sunday and afterwards, Faber admitted that his absence was due to his pending transfer to Spurs. He said: “I spoke with Stevie. He was busy transferring to Tottenham and wanted permission to go there. He was allowed to go there to build a new future,” (via football.london).
According to a report from the Mirror, Bergwijn may cost the north London club just £30 million and they suggest that reports in Holland have signalled that the deal should be done within 48 hours. The forward has been a regular for PSV this term, starting 16 times in the Eredivisie. In that time he has played a key part, scoring five goals and racking up an impressive 10 assists (Transfermarkt).
It seems that his potential arrival has divided Spurs fans, though. Whilst some feel that he would be a good addition, others aren’t so sure and think that they are signing a player in a position they do not need to improve and that therefore it is a bit of a waste of money. Here is what some had to say about it on Twitter…

Really. 5 goals this season. Not what is required . We need proven striker

This would be a classic Spurs January signing – spending money on a position we don’t need to strengthen whilst ignoring huge holes in other areas.
