Chelsea have agreed a fee with Tottenham Hotspur for the sale of Olivier Giroud, that is according to a report from The Sun.
However, it is also reported that the deal will only go through if the Blues can sign Dries Mertens from Napoli who would be a replacement for the Frenchman. At this stage, a deal for the Belgian doesn’t look likely, however.
Giroud has barely been involved at Chelsea this season, starting just two games in the Premier League (Transfermarkt) after falling behind young England striker Tammy Abraham in the pecking order. Several clubs other than Spurs have been linked with the 97-time France international this month, including Inter Milan and their Serie A rivals Lazio (Sky Sports).
It was reported recently that Giroud was open to moving to Tottenham (Sky Sports), despite playing for two of their rivals in Chelsea and Arsenal. But the deal now looks in the balance, with everything very much dependent on what happens with Mertens.
Many Spurs fans have been reacting to the latest update regarding Giroud on Twitter and most are not getting their hopes up about getting anything done. Meanwhile, others have suggested just cutting out the middle man and going for Mertens instead. Here is what some had to say…
Which won’t happen

Wouldn’t get hopes up too much on Giroud. Nothing Chelsea would love to do more than make us think we’ve got him at the expense of other targets and even have him at Hotspur Way then cancel the deal to screw us.

From what I understand it’s only if they can get a striker in themselves, which looks unlikely. Wouldn’t get hopes up until he’s in the shirt.

Don’t get why they don’t go all in on Mertens. He May not be a target man, but he is still worldclass, and the tier of player that Tottenham should aim to buy

Why won’t we just sign Mertens😡
