Toby Alderweireld has been heaping praise on new teammate Steven Bergwijn following his debut in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 victory against Manchester City on Sunday.
The Dutch international joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven last week and was thrown straight into the starting 11 by Jose Mourinho. It was a decision that paid off, with the 22-year-old scoring the opening goal of the game in the 63rd minute (BBC Sport). Speaking about Bergwijn after the win against the champions, Alderweireld told Algemeen Dagblad (via Tribal Football): “I was particularly impressed by his professionalism.
“Sometimes you have guys who excel in the Netherlands and then start here very naively. Steven is very sober, there is a very good head on him. I don’t know him that well yet, but you notice that he wants to work very hard.
“He showed that he can handle the level. We have a very positive group. If you behave normally, you belong immediately.
Those are some very positive words from the Belgian, however some fans think that he has made a veiled dig at his former teammate Danny Rose in the process.
Indeed, they picked out the comments on Bergwijn’s professionalism and normal behaviour and suggested that those were aimed at the England left-back who according to journalist Martin Lipton had a damaging effect on the Spurs dressing room prior to his January loan move to Newcastle United (talkSPORT).
Here is what some fans said on Twitter after reading Alderweireld’s post-match comments…
