Kevin Phillips has lauded Tottenham talisman Harry Kane after he agreed to sponsor Leyton Orient's shirts next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland striker believes Kane's latest gesture is evidence of the type of person he is.

Last month, the forward announced he will sponsor Orient's shirts to help support his former club and three charities during the ongoing pandemic.

The home kit will carry a message of support to frontline workers battling the virus, while Mind and Haven House Children’s Hospice will have their logos emblazoned on the jersey as part of the sponsorship, and the club stated 10% of the profits from every item sold will be contributed to the causes featured (BBC).

Phillips told football correspondent Dylan Childs "it just shows the class of the striker.

“He was on loan there at the beginning of his career. He enjoyed his spell there and he scored goals.

"I am not saying every player should go back and help their old clubs out but it is a great gesture from a player that oozes class.

"The way he plays the game and the way he conducts himself, for me, just oozes class and just sums Harry Kane up."

It is difficult to disagree with Phillips on this one, in light of the unprecedented circumstances.

Kane made his senior debut for the O’s in League One in 2011 at the young age of 17 years, 5 months and 18 days. He scored five goals for the London club before returning to White Hart Lane.

Orient's chief executive Danny Macklin later praised the Englishman for his generosity, telling Goal he is a "first class individual" after shirt sales spiked following his announcement.

Moreover, this follows another generous act earlier this year. Indeed, the England international video-called a widower during the nationwide lockdown, and the duo went on to chat about Colin Grainger's career with the Three Lions, Leeds United, Sheffield United and Sunderland.

All things considered, Kane's recent actions are a testament to his character, and he is no doubt an inspiration to young players coming through the ranks.
