Tottenham Hotspur: Giovani Lo Celso praised for Spurs performance against Norwich City by Kevin Phillips - Tottenham

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso following the midfielder’s performance as Spurs saw off Norwich City on Wednesday night.

Spurs recorded their first league win since the turn of the year as they battled to victory over the Canaries, who had levelled through a second-half Teemu Pukki penalty that had threatened to stretch the hosts’ winless top-flight run to five games.

Speaking to Football Insider after goals from Dele Alli and Heung-min Son sealed the points for Jose Mourinho’s side, Phillips was speaking about a man who didn’t get on the scoresheet in Lo Celso for his individual performance as the Argentinian caught his eye.

He said: “I thought he was good last night, again another player who’s taken a while to settle but I think it was a perfect game for him last night to showcase what he’s got.

“He’s got talent, he’s quick, dribbles with the ball really well. I think he can only get better and better as Tottenham progress, certainly under Mourinho. If you can defend and then give the ball to your attacking players and let them go and play, Lo Celso’s certainly a player that fits that mould.”

Should Tottenham sign Lo Celso permanently?

Lo Celso certainly offered his teammates some fine service last night from central midfield. According to WhoScored, the 23-year-old laid on four key passes throughout the game and completed five dribbles (more than anyone else on the pitch), while he had Spurs’ highest pass accuracy rate (85.5%) of those to play the full 90 minutes.

And while Spurs were largely wasteful in front of goal (with just three shots on target from 14 attempts), it was Lo Celso who shone, with BBC Sport hailing his ‘energy and creativity’ as he was named as their Man of the Match.

WhoScored’s match ratings also show that Lo Celso is beginning to show his best form for Spurs, backing up Phillips’ praise, with the midfielder posting his highest match ratings of the season having recorded back-to-back performances of over 7/10.

Therefore, it seems Lo Celso is indeed getting better as he looks to emerge as one of Spurs’ brightest talents.
