Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has claimed in his column for the Daily Mail that Mauricio Pochettino needs Giovani Lo Celso back fit from his hip injury, in order to give the Spurs boss ‘something special’.
The Club Atletico Rosario Central product, previously of Paris Saint-Germain, has so far only been able to represent his new side on three occasions for a total of 44 minutes (TransferMarkt), though, as he was sidelined for six weeks with a hip injury while on international duty earlier in September.
It would now be unlikely that he features before the next international break in October, but Redknapp feels his former side need the 19-cap star’s creativity as soon as possible.
“One thing [Tottenham] are missing is creativity,” Redknapp said. “Unless Christian Eriksen is playing, you really wonder where their ability to unlock defences is going to come from.
“Giovani Lo Celso, who joined this summer on loan from Real Betis, was supposed to help Eriksen with the creative burden and they need the Argentine back from his hip injury as soon as possible. When you need to unlock teams, you need that player who can do something special.”
Tottenham fans are yet to see what Lo Celso is truly capable of when unleashed to his full capabilities, as the Rosario-born midfielder’s longest outing for Spurs to date consisted of a 28-minute cameo against Newcastle United in August (WhoScored).
He earned his move to the Premier League by standing out in a Real Betis side that finished the 2018/19 La Liga campaign in 11th place, with Lo Celso hitting 16 goals and six assists across all competitions (TransferMarkt).
The Argentine was also hailed during his time in Spain for his ability to cause opposition backlines issues when deployed in a deeper midfield role with the freedom to roam, as he can carve incisive forward passes and finish emphatically.
Once fit, he should give Spurs the boost Redknapp feels his former side are in need of.
