Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that he is looking at bringing in a striker this month following his side drawing another blank against Watford on Saturday.
Since Harry Kane has missed out for Spurs following his hamstring tear on New Year’s Day, Tottenham have failed to find the net in the league, going scoreless against Southampton, Liverpool and the Hornets.
After the result at Vicarage Road, Mourinho was asked if a new striker was on his wish list this month.
He said (via Evening Standard): “If it’s possible, yes, if it’s not possible, no. We all know, we all want the best for the team, the best for the club. That is obvious. But we have to do things when it is possible to do, it is the right thing to do.”
It seems clear that Spurs are in need of striking firepower, especially having limped past second-tier Middlesbrough across two matches in the FA Cup without the service of Kane. Saturday’s admission certainly suggests Mourinho would like to be active in the next couple of weeks in the transfer market.
The indication of Mourinho’s intentions will perhaps have been an attempt to placate those who will be hoping for reinforcements to Tottenham’s attacking ranks. However, Mourinho did not appear to be too hopeful of succeeding in his efforts to find a striker – judging by the manager making clear that it has to be ‘the right thing to do’.
However, with Kane expected to be out until April at the earliest, recent results would suggest Mourinho will not have been too encouraged by what his side has produced in the short period following their only striker’s injury setback.
So it looks clear that another striker would be of great benefit to Spurs, though it remains to be seen whether Mourinho’s apparent yearning for a Kane replacement is demonstrated in Tottenham’s activity in the coming weeks.
