New Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho wants to make Bruno Fernandes his first signing at the club, that is according to O Jogo via the Daily Mail.
Who would you rather?
The Portugal international was thought to be a target for Spurs and Manchester United in the summer (according to journalist Goncalo Lopes via The Sun), but ended up remaining at Sporting Lisbon.
Mourinho only joined Spurs on Wednesday following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, but the report suggests that he already has an idea of who he wants to bring to the club.
One of those players seems to be Fernandes, who is being linked with the north London club by a number of major news outlets in Portugal. As mentioned, the midfielder was linked with both Tottenham and Manchester United in the summer and it seems as though the former are set to reignite their interest in the 25-year-old.
Fernandes would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham Hotspur. Indeed, he has been in fine form for Sporting Lisbon this season having scored nine goals and provided six assists in all competitions from midfield (Transfermarkt).
Judging by those statistics, the Portuguese would provide a goalscoring threat from the middle of the park which is something that Spurs haven’t really had this season – their current midfielders have combined for just five league goals this term (Transfermarkt).
His potential arrival could also finally mean it is the end of the road for Christian Eriksen at the north London club.
The Dane made is known that he wanted to leave the club last summer (Ekstra Bladet via The Telegraph), but a move never materialised. He has since remained at Spurs, but hasn’t performed well at all and was an unused substitute in their most recent game against Sheffield United (BBC Sport).
His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but if Spurs do manage to land Fernandes in January then they may be happy to move Eriksen on in the same month.
