Former England striker Kevin Phillips believes that the time has come for Jan Vertonghen to leave Tottenham Hotspur.
The 118-time Belgian international has been at Spurs since joining from Ajax back in 2012 and has been an outstanding player for them during his time in north London. Indeed he has racked up an impressive 307 appearances for them in all competitions, scoring 13 goals in that time (Transfermarkt).
However, recently Jose Mourinho has been rotating him in and out of the starting line-up. He has been in the 11 for just four of their last seven games, which would indicate that he is no longer a guaranteed starter. Added to that, in his most recent appearance against Southampton in the FA Cup, he was withdrawn after just 54 minutes which led to Vertonghen looking extremely upset and dejected (The Sun).
As a result, Phillips thinks that the 32-year-old’s time at Spurs is now coming to an end and has admitted that it may be time for him to leave for pastures new. Speaking about the defender’s situation at Tottenham, Phillips told Football Insider: “You saw the reaction of Vertonghen when he came off in the last game. He wasn’t happy. You could just see he was in dismay.
“He’s been a good servant for the club, but it might be just time for him to move on and fresh blood to come in.”
It is hard to disagree with Phillips on this one and although Vertonghen has been a brilliant player for Spurs down the years, it looks like it is time for him to leave. At 32, he isn’t getting any younger and it looks like he is now struggling to cope with the intensity of Premier League football, hence why Mourinho has been leaving him out of late.
Added to that, Tottenham also have Davinson Sanchez who plays in the same position but is just 23 and should hit his peak in the next few years, whilst the emergence of 20-year-old Japhet Tanganga could also see the Belgian fall further down the pecking order.
Is Jan Vertonghen past it?
With Vertonghen’s contract set to expire in the summer (Transfermarkt), it makes sense for him to walk away at the end of the current campaign and seek a new challenge elsewhere.
