Pundit Kevin Phillips thinks that Willian ‘would be a good signing’ for Tottenham Hotspur and has urged the north London club to ‘go for it’ in the summer transfer window.
Phillips was speaking to Football Insider about how he believes that the 31-year old could potentially be a good low-risk signing considering that he is out of contract in the summer, meaning that Spurs could potentially land him on the cheap.
He further commented: “Willian is a player that I like. I think he’s got great qualities, great attributes. At the end of the day, it’s whether or not he fits into Mourinho’s style and where he plays. Mourinho generally plays a 4-2-3-1, so you could certainly see Willian playing on the left or right and giving them a bit of quality.
“If they get him on a free and it isn’t too much money then go for it. He’s been in and out the side at Chelsea, whereas if he goes to a side where he’ll play week in and week out, you will certainly see the best of Willian.
“For me, he’s still got plenty to offer in the Premier League, and if Tottenham were to secure his services, I think that would be a good signing.”
With the Brazilian’s ability to play off of both flanks and potentially in the number 10 role, his versatility could prove to be a key asset for Jose Mourinho’s men who have had a number of injury problems in those sorts of attacking positions this season. Mourinho also coached him at Chelsea and so would perhaps know how to best utilise him in his system.
How much is Willian worth?
£25m or more
Less than £25m
Willian could possibly leave for free in the summer if he does not negotiate a new contract with the London club, so bringing the 31-year old in could prove to be a decent piece of business for Tottenham. If he comes good, Spurs will have bragging rights over their rivals for letting him join for free.
It will be interesting to see, though, if Willian plays ‘week in and week out’ as Phillips suggested if he does end up joining Spurs. There is a lot of competition for places in those positions with Heung-Min Son, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura, Giovani Lo Celso, Erik Lamela and new boy Stephen Bergwijn all capable of playing in attack.
