Tottenham Hotspur were left surprised by the lack of interest in Toby Alderweireld over the summer, as reported by football.london.
There was a period where the Belgium international was available for £25m due to a clause in his contract, though this wasn’t enough for anyone to make a serious move.
Now, alongside his centre-back partner Jan Vertonghen, Spurs could be set to lose the 30-year-old for free during the summer, with both of their contracts coming to an end, as per Transfermarkt.
Alderweireld started 33 Premier League games last season, coming on as a substitute once, as per WhoScored.
During the campaign, the Belgium international averaged 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 4.9 clearances and 0.6 blocks per game.
This time around, he has started 8 league matches so far, averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 3.6 clearances and 1.4 blocks.
The statistics indicate that despite hitting 30, Alderweireld is not on the decline yet, despite Spurs’ struggles so far this season.
However, there have been times where his defending has looked questionable, with an example being Brighton & Hove Albion’s third goal on the weekend, where he didn’t put any real pressure on Aaron Connolly, half-heartedly standing the teenager up, before the Irishman shifted the ball past him with ease before scoring, as shown in the highlights video on the BT Sport YouTube channel.
Spurs will need Alderweireld to step up this season, having conceded a combined 10 goals against Bayern Munich and Brighton.
They could have perhaps used the £25m to get someone in who would be able to perform for the club over the long-term if he had left during the summer, but they now need to make the most of him while he is at the club.
Will Spurs finish in the top four?
