Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper André Onana to strengthen their current options at the back.
According to Voetbal International, via talkSPORT, the North London club are concerned with the recent form of captain and first-choice keeper Hugo Lloris, while Michel Vorm has struggled to fit into the club’s plans as the accomplished second-choice option.
Whether Onana is targeted as a replacement for the out of sorts Lloris or just as another backup option remains unclear, although this season’s performances by the club’s main goalkeepers could suggest that manager Mauricio Pochettino is thinking of establishing a new number one for Spurs.
Onana has been a regular in the Dutch side since making his debut in 2016 and at the age of 22, he is an exciting prospect for any club that is having problems in-goal. He was also a wanted man in the summer but Ajax managed to keep hold of him for this season.
The Cameroon international’s current deal runs until 2021 but could be on the move soon if Spurs make him a priority. After a quiet summer transfer window, that saw Spurs fail to make any signing, the club could be very active in the January window, especially if they hope to sort out their goalkeeping troubles.
The shot-stopper was particularly impressive in Ajax’s 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League earlier this month and looks set to have a big influence in how his team’s season plays out. Currently in second place on the Eredivisie log, five points behind PSV Eindhoven, Ajax will be looking to go all out to win the Dutch league again, after falling short in the past four seasons. They will also be gunning to make it to the knockout stages of the European competition after the solid start they made.
