Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has praised the impact that Erik Lamela made during his cameo appearance against Chelsea at the weekend.
The north London outfit lost 2-1 and the Argentinian began the game at Stamford Bridge on the bench before replacing Tanguy Ndombele after 63 minutes (BBC Sport).
However, Keown was impressed with Lamela when he came on, suggesting that he made a positive impact and made things happen for Spurs.
Speaking about the ex-Roma man’s performance against the Blues, Keown said on Match of the Day (22nd February 2020): “I thought Lamela completely changed the game, he played with conviction, expression, they got lucky, but they deserved that by getting players forward. But I don’t agree with Mourinho that he doesn’t have the necessary firepower, he definitely has, it’s just the message that he’s given to those players.”
Keown is spot on here, when Lamela came on he drove Spurs forward and was positive. Indeed, it was his run and shot which forced the own goal from Antonio Rudiger in the 89th minute (BT Sport).
He was very involved and despite only playing 27 minutes of the game he still managed 32 touches, whilst also completing two dribbles, winning three ground duels and one tackle (SofaScore).
Tottenham need one of their forward players to step up to the plate at the moment with Harry Kane out until at least April (tottenhamhotspur.com) and Son Heung-min potentially out for the season (BBC Sport). They are the club’s leading goalscorers having netted 33 between them this term (BBC Sport), so someone needs to fill that void.
On the evidence of his performance against Chelsea, Lamela could be the man to provide that spark up front for Spurs.
