Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan is delighted to see that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Sheffield United defender Jack O’Connell.
It has recently been reported by the Daily Star that Spurs are considering trying to sign the former Brentford man, who has been a key figure in the Blades’ impressive Premier League campaign which sees them seventh in the table after 23 games, conceding just 22 goals in that time (BBC Sport).
Whelan believes that O’Connell would be a great signing for Tottenham, suggesting that he has all the attributes that Jose Mourinho would want when looking to sign a new defender.
Speaking about the 25-year-old being linked with a move to north London, Whelan told Football Insider: “It doesn’t surprise me that a team like Tottenham would be looking at those sort of players, as they’re aggressive, they love defending, they’re mentally strong, good on the ball, and they’d tick a lot of boxes that you’d want.
“Other teams may not look at him as he’s not a named player from someone like Juventus or an Inter Milan, or one of the glamorous clubs.
“But I tell you what, he’s probably better than most of them as he loves defending, he can cover the ground, quick, strong, very dominant in the air, good on the ball, gets forward, so why wouldn’t that tick a lot of boxes for a lot of managers?”
Whelan is absolutely correct to suggest that O’Connell would be a great signing for Spurs. Indeed, he has excelled this season in what is his first ever season playing Premier League football.
Tottenham could perhaps to be looking for a left-sided centre-back with Jan Vertonghen’s contract set to expire in the summer and O’Connell may well be the ideal replacement. He, himself, is left-footed and this term he is averaging 4.7 clearances and 1.4 interceptions per game, whilst also winning 67.9% of his aerial duels (SofaScore).
He has been part of a rock-solid Sheffield United defence, helping them to eight clean sheets in the league after 23 games which is a number only bettered by leaders Liverpool (premierleague.com). That shows that he is capable of being part of a strong defensive unit in the top tier.
At 25-years-old he also still has plenty of room to improve his game too. He is producing a high level of performance in his first year in the top flight, so he could surely become an even better Premier League defender as he gains more and more experience playing at that level.
