Former Premier League striker Carlton Cole believes that Olivier Giroud would jump at the chance to fill in for Harry Kane at Spurs.
The Chelsea striker is out of favour under Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge and has been instructed by France manager Didier Deschamps to leave his current club ahead of the upcoming European Championships.
Discussing who Tottenham could turn to following the long-term injury suffered by Harry Kane earlier this month, Cole suggested Giroud could be the answer to their prayers with few solid alternatives up top.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, Cole threw the World Cup winner’s hat into the ring, arguing the Frenchman would be more than happy to defy his Arsenal past by signing for their arch-rivals.
He said: “Olivier Giroud knows what he’s about, he scores goals. He’s a nuisance to any defence but he needs games now. He’s still focusing on the national team as well, so he needs to get out there.
“I don’t know whether Chelsea would do the business, it is a big ask for that to happen – but I know Olivier Giroud would be well up for that.”
Cole’s suggestion may seem a little left-field, but it is not without basis. Giroud has appeared just seven times for Chelsea this year – the most recent of those coming at the end of November in their defeat to West Ham United.
It looks like there is no way back for him at Chelsea with the striker completely left out of the club’s last six Premier League games, while he was an unused substitute as a much-changed Chelsea saw off Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.
With Euro 2020 on the horizon, it seems Giroud could be on the move this month, with Sky Italia (via Football.london) reporting that the striker has agreed terms with Inter over a move to Serie A and a reunion with ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
That would appear to nip any Tottenham move in the bud, though with a place at the Euros potentially on the line, it is hardly surprising that this story is picking up pace.
Tottenham representing a viable option could be highly controversial for Giroud, having turned out for two London giants. However, it looks as if Inter may save the ex-Gunner from having to make a decision which could send shockwaves through north London.
