Tottenham Hotspur: Paul Robinson hopes Spurs drop reported interest in Fernando Llorente in favour of Krzysztof Piatek

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks Spurs should steer clear of ex-striker Fernando Llorente after the Spanish forward was linked with a sensational return to north London following the long-term injury to Harry Kane.

Italian outlet Gazetta dello Sport has suggested that the Napoli striker could be an option for Tottenham as they seek to find a stand-in for the injured Kane, with Jose Mourinho unsure over whether his top scorer will be fit before the end of the season.

However, speaking to Football Insider, Robinson argued that re-signing Llorente would be a bad idea – and voiced his support towards a move for AC Milan hitman Krzysztof Piatek, who has also been linked in recent weeks.

Of a potential approach for Llorente, Robinson said: “That’s not the answer at all! He left for a reason, he didn’t score the goals, and he didn’t fill the role when Harry Kane wasn’t there.

Would you like Tottenham to sign Krzysztof Piatek?

“I think Piatek at AC Milan is the type of player they should be looking at, he’s the one, obviously [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic has gone in there, so there may be an opportunity to get him. He’s young, he’s [a] No9, he’s tall, he leads the line. So I certainly wouldn’t look at Llorente, he’s not the answer, I’d look at someone like Piatek instead.”

With Llorente on Tottenham’s books as recently as this summer, to let him go and not replace him in the off-season seems a massive oversight from the decision-makers at Spurs. However, the fact that Llorente was not even starting every game when Kane was out last season suggests that he was surplus to requirements compared to the attacking alternatives Spurs had at the time. So to go back for that very player, even under a new manager, would seem rather strange – hence Robinson’s understandable bemusement.

Piatek, on the other hand, is a younger talent at 24 – and although he has seen his goalscoring numbers drop this season after a terrific start in Italian top-flight football, he would still surely be a better outlet than Llorente judging by his age and his previous exploits even if his place at Milan is potentially threatened by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s recent arrival.
