Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Tottenham and England midfielder Harry Winks following his performance in the 7-0 drubbing of Montenegro on Thursday night.
Winks played in a central-midfield role as the Three Lions cruised past their opponents to seal their place at Euro 2020 next summer.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Spurs goalie lauded the 23-year-old’s passing ability, saying: “I think that’s what he gives you. He gives you so much more than the other England midfielders.
“For me, I think Harry Winks is one of the best of the bunch. He dominates the game, defensively and offensively he offers you both and his ball retention, the stats speak for themselves.
“A fit Harry Winks is an important selection for England.”
Robinson claims that ‘the stats speak for themselves’, but if they could, they’d probably say ‘Yeah, but it was only Montenegro’.
In fairness to Winks, among the outfield starters on Thursday, he achieved the highest passing rate with 95.5% (along with John Stones).
However, Montenegro will not be playing at the European Championships in June. They are a team below the likes of Scotland and Congo DR in the latest FIFA world rankings – and shipped 12 goals to England alone in the current qualifying phase.
Surely, a Premier League footballer will be expected to perform well in such circumstances, and in the same way that Harry Kane will not score three every game and Ben Chilwell will not provide three assists per match, Winks would do well to keep that up against more established contenders for major honours – while he was clearly not the only one to impress at Wembley.
So although he did no wrong, it is difficult to make the case for Winks to start regularly on his recent stats alone, given the status of the opposition in the midweek rout.
Should Tottenham go all out for Ben Chilwell?
No chance Levy will spend that
