Pundit Noel Whelan thinks that Serge Aurier should leave Tottenham after watching his display in the 3-0 loss away at RB Leipzig in the Champions League last-16 (via Football Insider).
The result meant that the north London club went out 4-0 on aggregate having lost the first leg 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium courtesy of a Timo Werner penalty. It means that Spurs will have to finish in the top five spots in the Premier League, depending on Manchester City’s potential Champions League ban, to reach European football’s elite club competition for next season.
Whelan was particularly unsatisfied with Aurier’s performance versus Leipzig, and told Football Insider what he thought of the right-back:
“Tottenham sold the wrong right-back last summer. Kieran Trippier is comfortably a better player than Aurier and should not have been let go for £20million, which is nothing these days.
“Aurier’s fine going forward, although his crossing usually lets him down, but defensively he’s all over the place. He gets caught out of position all the time and throws himself wildly into tackles he can’t win.
“It’s embarrassing watching him defend. He has to be first out the door this summer.”
Aurier’s crossing certainly let him down against Leipzig, where he only managed one successful cross in five attempts. Defensively, he did not block any shots and only managed to make one tackle, one interception and one clearance in the entire game, earning him a respectively low Sofascore rating of 6.4.
Aurier ranks amongst the lowest of his teammates in the Champions League overall for passing accuracy (79%) and through balls, where he did not manage one according to WhoScored. He was also dispossessed the most with an average of 2.6 per game, and was amongst the highest for average fouls per game (1.4).
Kieran Trippier was part of the Atletico Madrid backline that had to be disciplined against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League and he was able to keep direct opponent Sadio Mane quiet as the Senegalese only managed to make five out of ten successful dribbles, with Trippier only being dribbled past once (via Sofascore).
Whelan thinks that Spurs let go of the wrong right-back in the summer, and based off of recent Champions League performances you can see why.
Spurs fans, do you think you should have kept Trippier and sold Aurier? Do you think Aurier should leave in the summer? Let us know in the comments down below!
