Kevin Phillips has tipped Tottenham defender Juan Foyth to join Leeds United as he could replace Ben White.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland striker suggested the Peacocks could make a move for Foyth in the summer as Spurs value him at just £8m and he has vital experience in the Premier League and Champions League.
Earlier this month, the outlet revealed Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta is keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old, and the Lilywhites are ready to offload him in the transfer market.
Phillips admitted he rates the youngster highly, but he is yet to hit the same heights as his English counterpart.
The pundit told football reporter Dylan Childs “I like Foyth. He has shown that he can play in the Premier League, it does not faze him.
“If Ben White moves on then you are at least replacing him with Premier League experience. He is a good player but there is question marks over whether he is the same calibre as Ben White.
“A run of games would certainly benefit him. It has been a while since he has played regularly but I like the qualities he possesses. I could definitely see that one happening.
“It is almost a no-brainer. If they could get that over the line it would be a good deal because it would not cost a fortune.”
It is difficult to disagree with Phillips on this one.
After arriving at White Hart Lane from Club Estudiantes de La Plata in 2017, Foyth was regarded as a prodigy of Mauricio Pochettino, but he has fallen out of favour with the Argentine’s successor.
Indeed, he has only played in one Premier League game for Jose Mourinho’s side all season, and finds himself below the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez in the pecking order.
As it stands, he is set to leave North London before the start of next season, and the Whites have been closely linked with the Argentine over the past few months.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has arguably transformed the Yorkshire outfit by giving young players a chance and developing talent.
Although he has struggled for game time, Foyth’s underlying quality cannot be ignored, as he impressed Mourinho during the 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.
He clearly has bags of untapped potential, and while it seems the Portuguese has grown tired of his silly mistakes, Bielsa could be the catalyst to reignite his career, should Leeds confirm promotion to the Premier League.
