Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has suggested that the club get rid of Jan Vertonghen with the defender yet to commit his future to the team.
Is Jan Vertonghen past his best?
Vertonghen’s contract is set to expire in the summer and despite compatriot Toby Alderweireld signing a new deal in recent weeks, Robinson believes the best course of action for Spurs would be to cash in on the 32-year-old centre-back.
The Belgian defender has remained a favourite under Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese’s arrival in north London, with Vertonghen starting every league game and captaining the side in their 1-1 FA Cup draw with Middlesbrough at the weekend.
However, speaking to Football Insider, Robinson feels that Tottenham should not risk losing him in the summer for nothing.
He said: “I’m always a big believer that if a player hasn’t signed a contract by January you have to let them go for whatever money you can get.
“Vertonghen has been a great servant for Tottenham [but] I think if he was going to sign a new contract, he would have by now with Alderweireld already signing.
“You would have thought the two would have been tied up together, so the fact he hasn’t signed means he may be looking elsewhere.
“In my own personal opinion, rather than lose a player in four months for nothing, it’s better you get something for them in January.”
Vertonghen’s role under Mourinho this season suggests the Spurs boss may not be of the mind to take Robinson’s advice.
As one of only four solid centre-back options currently at Spurs, it may be difficult to imagine the club sanctioning a sale without having readied a replacement.
However, there is plenty of logic to Robinson’s point of view. Selling Vertonghen now would, even in a worst-case scenario, leave them financially better off in the summer to source a new centre-back should they be unable to replace him in the weeks ahead.
Though given the defensive frailties Spurs have displayed this season (with one clean sheet in 13 matches), you may not begrudge Mourinho too much for sticking with his contract rebel for the time being.
