Tanguy Ndombele is running out of time at Tottenham, that is according to former Premier League forward Kevin Phillips.
Ndombele was recently criticised by manager Jose Mourinho for not giving enough in a 1-1 draw away to Burnley, and Phillips has sided with the Spurs boss following the 23-year-old’s lacklustre showing.
Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland striker said: “There’s absolutely no excuse not to go out and try your hardest. For a top player who has come in for a hell of a lot of money, who’s playing in a top team, it’s bordering on disgraceful.
“Mourinho isn’t daft. He won’t have come out and outed him without trying everything else first. It stinks of the last chance saloon to me. Mourinho will be hoping to get a response from Ndombele, and if he doesn’t, he won’t be in his plans for next season, that’s for sure.”
Looking at some of the numbers from that game, Ndombele cannot have too much complaints about the criticism he is getting internally and externally.
According to WhoScored, during that Premier League encounter at Turf Moor, the French midfielder failed to win a single tackle or make an interception. He also failed to make a key pass before getting hooked off at half-time, so it really was a match where Ndombele struggled to make an impact.
Do you regret Tottenham signing Ndombele?
All in all, not good enough for a £50m-plus player.
It is not as if Ndombele has been a total dud, though, with the France international showing glimpses of his quality. He has been exceptional at times when it has come to carrying the ball, managing to average two dribbles per league game. In the Spurs ranks, only Son Heung-min is having more success there (2.3).
Still, it is clear that the likes of Mourinho and Phillips want to see a lot more, which is fair given how much money was spent on the former Lyon man.
