Tottenham landing £45m-rated Man City champion could be a wonderful signing for Pochettino

The Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Transfer Tavern are wondering whether or not they’ll be able to call on the services of a certain Toby Alderwerield next season. Indeed, the punters propping up our bar believe the Belgian to be one of the very best in Europe and hope he sticks around in N17 for a long time.

However, unless you’ve been living under a rock during the last few months, you’ll know that the former Atletico Madrid man has been linked with a move away. With big offers seemingly likely this summer, our local Lilywhites are fairly scared about losing him this summer.

Though Davison Sanchez has looked comfortable at times during his debut season on these shores, his performance against Manchester City showed how far he needs to come in order to deal with the best teams in the league, so some strengthening in central defence would be well-placed.

With that in mind, perhaps Mauricio Pochettino should consider a move for England international, John Stones, as a potential replacement. Yes, the former Everton defender has struggled over the course of the last few months, though it’s hard to doubt his quality on the ball and, paired next to both Jan Vertonghen and the aforementioned Sanchez, he could help replace the classy Alderwerield.

The arrival of Aymeric Laporte may have made his life a tad more difficult at the Etihad of late, though few would doubt Stones’ ability on the ball. The problem is, City’s side don’t do much to protect him and he doesn’t have the pace required to keep up with the ‘bursts’ that often effects a Pep Guardiola side.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have exactly that. Few sides in the league – perhaps even on the continent – have a better set-up than Spurs when it comes to protecting their backline. Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, Pochettino’s track record when it comes to developing English talent could also come into play, helping all parties.

If Stones is available, he could be a wonderful signing.
