There are a few whispers around the Football Transfer Tavern that Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a surprise £4 million bid for Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry this summer.
Tony Banks from The Express confirms the speculation admitting that Barry’s time at the Etihad Stadium looks set to end after the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini later this week.
City have already spent close to £45 million on attacking midfielder Fernandinho and winger Jesus Navas as they look to wrestle the title back off Manchester United. To help reduce the wage bill we are now expecting a clear out of players left over from Roberto Mancini’s reign.
Andre Villas-Boas is seeking an experienced midfielder to replace Scott Parker who suffered with persistent injuries last season and that could see him offloaded to Sunderland with Barry arriving to take his position in the Spurs side.
The England international is moving into the final year of his contract with City and the former Aston Villa man is yet to be offered a new deal with former City boss Mark Hughes also interested in bringing Barry to his new club Stoke City.
Should Spurs be looking at Barry as a cheap short-term solution? Let us know your thoughts below.
