Tottenham Hotspur would benefit greatly from signing Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet as his skill set is precisely what they’re lacking.
Things seem to finally be falling into place for Tottenham Hotspur and they know that with the team making strides in Europe, additions will be most welcome and even desired – both by the squad and the fans equally. The newest player who looks like he might join Spurs, Maxwel Cornet, just may be the piece of the jigsaw Mauricio Pochettino has been missing so far.
Spurs, for all of their recent and past shortcomings, have been one of the greatest overachievers in the Premier League. You could even go as far as to say that if given the right resources and freedom, Pochettino would make these lads into world-beaters. And in a way, he already has with the potential Champions League the absolute proof of that. But still, no matter how good they sometimes look, there’s always that feeling around the camp, their fans and the media that if they were to be given just the tiniest of pushes, it would all suddenly fall into place.
Transfers are not the most important thing when looking to further improve one’s squad and Spurs can certainly attest to that but this time around, it just might do the trick for the good ol’ Poch. If the reports coming from Football Insider are to be believed, Spurs are eyeing a swoop for Lyon’s ace Maxwel Cornet and to be honest, the lad really looks like a great fit.
There’s probably no such thing as too many great goalscorers but Cornet would give Spurs much more than just goals. We’re talking about a player that both scores bangers and creates them on a pretty consistent basis. Even though he can only boast with five goals and the same number of assists in the ongoing Ligue 1 campaign, his skill set definitely suits Spurs’ playstyle.
Having someone of the skill and pace of Son is surely a great ace to have in your sleeve but Tottenham seriously lack genuine speed going into the final third, especially since they are pretty low on wingers as it is. Most of that burden, for that reason, falls on the South Korean’s back and although he sometimes thrives on that pressure, there will come a time when he cannot burden it by himself.
In comes the £10.8m-rated (Transfermarkt) Cornet – a fresh and hungry 22-year-old ready to leave his heart on the pitch and a player that seemingly ticks all the boxes Daniel Levy is having problems dealing with. In theory, it’s a match made in heaven and if Spurs’ interest is real, they should be all over the Frenchman as soon as the Champions League is done and dusted, whichever way it goes.
And of course, we can’t really forget how Cornet cut through Manchester City like a hot knife through butter back when those two teams met on the biggest stage of them all. Surely that kind of a player is worth keeping on their radars.
