Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s clash with Watford in the Premier League at Wembley this evening, what with their team searching for the three points that could go some way to securing their place in the top four.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men however go into tonight’s clash at the national stadium having failed to win any of their last three matches, with a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final last time out ending their silverware hopes for another season. And with a 3-1 loss to champions Manchester City and a 1-1 draw with Brighton in their past two league games, they really need to get back to winning ways tonight to stamp their authority in the race for a top four spot.
Consequently, there are many optimistic Tottenham supporters in the Tavern at present, many of whom are confident that their club can indeed get the better of Javi Gracia’s side this evening, what with the Hornets having failed to win any of their last six league games.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Toby Alderweireld, amongst others, could be offloaded by Pochettino this summer.
And alongside reports that John Stones could leave Manchester City during the close season, the North Londoners should seek to replace the Belgian ace with the £45 million-rated England international (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, 23-year-old Stones has struggled for regular football under Pep Guardiola since the turn of the year, with the centre back having started just three times in the Premier League in 2018.
Yes, injuries have played their part in his difficulties, but as has the fine form of Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany, while the January arrival of Aymeric Laporte has hardly helped his cause in returning to the starting eleven.
And with possible doubts over his City future, Pochettino’s Spurs must seek to make their move, as there’s little doubting that Stones has the ability to go on and become a top-quality defender.
Clearly, there aren’t many better ball-playing defenders than the 23-year-old in the Premier League at present, while it’s arguable that he has even improved defensively under Guardiola this season – after all, Stones played a key part in helping City establish their dominance in the first half of the campaign.
And given Pochettino’s track record of developing and improving young English talent, what with Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane all Spurs and indeed England regulars, Stones is sure to become an even better player under the Argentine.
And alongside the outstanding Jan Vertonghen, another excellent ball-playing defender but also with the defensive capabilities to match, he’d have the ideal mentor to help eek out every ounce of his ability.
Thus, with Alderweireld reportedly on his way out of the club this summer, Spurs must seek to replace him with linked-away Stones.
