The incomings of Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke have obviously seen Tottenham’s barren spell in the transfer market come to an end yet, with plenty of time in the window remaining, the talk of potential outgoings is also beginning to start.
Indeed, the Guardian have reported that AS Roma are interested in an intriguing swap deal involving Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and talented Italian midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, with the idea of Spurs paying a surplus to secure the £40m-rated talent reportedly floated.
Calciomercato (via the Sun) reported at the start of June that Tottenham were interested in the midfielder but faced fierce competition from Juventus, so for a player already reportedly on their radar, a cut-price could indeed be an attractive proposition.
WhoScored identify dribbling, finishing, through balls and in-direct set pieces as particular strengths, while acknowledging aerial duels, passing and holding onto the ball as weaknesses. At just 20-years-old, the strengths are clearly outweighing the weaknesses, given that he already has two senior Italian caps to his name and the substantial praise that has come his way.
He scored four goals and registered two assists in Serie A last season and Mark Doyle of Goal described him as Roma and Italy’s most exciting teenager since Francesco Totti after scoring three Serie A goals by the age of 19. On top of that, Roberto Mancini also called the teenager up to the senior Italy squad before he even featured for Roma.
Mauricio Pochettino’s track-record in developing young players such as Dele Alli and the like is impressive, so the prospect of welcoming such a highly-rated individual already making an impact at the top level, as his stats in Serie A would suggest he has for someone his age, it could be a forward-thinking move for Spurs.
Eni Aluko pinpointed the Spurs midfield as a potential weak spot ahead of the Champions League final loss to Liverpool in the Guardian and, while the club-record addition of Ndombele is clearly a move to strengthen there, the arrival of a young talent in this mould could be good for the north London club.
Considering the fact that Tottenham boast the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth in central areas right now, it could be argued that the potential capture of Zaniolo is worth the exit of Toby Alderweireld.
