Tottenham supporters have been somewhat quieter in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team thwarted by League One strugglers Rochdale in the fifth round of the FA Cup last time out, drawing 2-2 with Keith Hill’s side at Spotland.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the third tier’s bottom club off the back of drawing 2-2 with Italian giants Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, thus leaving them as favourites for progression when they meet in the return leg at Wembley in a fortnight’s time. Yet Spurs have a battle on their hands in trying to reach the last eight of the FA Cup, as a Steve Davis strike in the last minute deservedly secured a draw for Rochdale last weekend, thus earning them a lucrative replay at Wembley next week.
Subsequently, there have been some frustrated Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from The Times, which suggests that their club have seemingly made a big call regarding the future of defender Toby Alderweireld.

The 28-year-old made the move to North London back in 2015 after impressing in a loan spell at Southampton the season before, and he has since gone on to become one of the Premier League’s best defenders in his time at Spurs.
Yet the situation surrounding his contract has been speculated upon for a while now given the Belgium international’s current deal expires in 2019, and while Tottenham reportedly have a one-year extension they can trigger, it would bring into play a £25 million release clause.
And recent reports suggest that they are not interested in meeting Alderweireld’s reported wage demands, and as such are reportedly set to sanction his departure in the summer in a bid to receive a decent price for the centre-back.
And this news is sure to frustrate our resident Tottenham fans, who have seen Alderweireld play an enormous part in their success in recent years, yet seemingly look to be on his way out of the club in the summer.
Landlord’s verdict: Toby Alderweireld has gone on to become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League during his time at Tottenham, but his stint in the capital may well be coming to an end this summer.
Reports suggest that Spurs aren’t willing to meet his wage demands and as such are set to make a big call by reportedly sanctioning his departure in the summer, in a bid to receive a sizable fee for his services before risking losing the £31.5m-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) for nothing in a years’ time.
This news is sure to come as a blow to several Tottenham supporters, but with the club running a strict wage structure, many may well understand the club’s stance, even if it’s a stance which is arguably unlikely to lay the foundations for continued success on the big stage.
