Mauricio Pochettino has had great success previously working with full-backs, being dubbed ‘the full-back whisperer’ in a recent article by Alasdair Gold on Football.London, and he could be set to strike again as The Daily Mail link Spurs with a £25m move for Ryan Sessegnon.
Should Sessegnon make the trip across London from Fulham to Spurs, returning to the Premier League after his single season in the top flight with the Cottagers, it would be interesting to see how he gets on under Pochettino.
As an attacking option from left-back, Sessegnon does well when compared with the current two Spurs players in that position, Danny Rose and Ben Davies. Comparing the three, Sessegnon comes out on top in goals, assists and shots per game, as well as only just being edged out by Rose on key passes per 90 minutes.
It also helps that the young Fulham man has been dribbled past fewer than both Rose and Davies and commits fewer fouls than the pair too, stats via WhoScored’s player comparison tool. Indeed, while he’d bolster the options available to the club in terms of having more players to pick from, he could also be a potential replacement for Danny Rose.
Back in early June, the defender came out and claimed that ‘it is no secret’ that he could leave the Lilywhites this summer, via The Independent. If that is the case then Sessegnon fits in as one of Pochettino’s two left-backs alongside Ben Davies in North London.
If Rose does stay at the club, though, Sessegnon has the versatility to play further up the pitch too. In an interview with FourFourTwo back in early 2018 the payer himself touched on his own versatility, claiming that he’s ‘happy in either role’, those roles being a left-back or a left-winger.
Having the ability to fit in as either an attacker or a defender for whoever signs him makes Sessegnon an extremely valuable player, with Gold also claiming in another article earlier this month that Pochettino does enjoy working with versatile players.
