When we at the Football Transfer Tavern discovered Lewis Holtby was set to join Tottenham in the summer, we knew Andre Villas-Boas had done well. The Daily Mail has now reported that AVB may not even wait that long.
The club are pushing for a spot in the top four this season and look much improved under the former Porto and Chelsea manager, and are also taking the Europa League very seriously. Of course this means that every player is needed and given the recent injury to Sandro – which is thought to keep him out until the end of the season, AVB is considering an early swoop for Holtby.
Last week the manager ruled out the possibility of buying the player now for a nominal fee when they could get him for free in the summer. Now circumstances have changed and the Portuguese manager is weighing up the option of buying the 22-year-old now or even denying Jake Livermore the chance to go out on loan.
Of course stopping Livermore from joining QPR would be a blow to Harry Redknapp but the player would be willing to stay at Spurs if the opportunity for regular first team football arose. Quite what Schalke think of these latest developments remains to be seen but given that they would lose the player in the summer regardless, making some money now may not seem like a bad idea.
