Tottenham should certainly persevere with £9m-rated star next season despite struggles

Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their team edge past Premier League strugglers Stoke City 2-1 to enhance their chances of finishing in the top four.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the relegation-threatened Potters eight points clear of fifth place Chelsea, and very much on course for a third successive top four finish. And Spurs have tightened their grip on Champions League qualification as goals from Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane either side of Mame Biram Diouf’s equaliser secured the victory for the North London outfit, which alongsisde Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with West Ham moved Pochettino’s side ten points clear with just six matches to go.

Consequently, there have been many thrilled Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are supremely confident that their side have done enough to seal another season of Champions League football.

In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they will consider around €12 million for striker Vincent Janssen.

And while the Netherlands international has endured a testing time since his move to Tottenham, the North London club should persevere with the £9 million-rated star (as per Transfermarktnext season.

Ultimately, the 23-year-old has found it tough replicating his AZ form for Spurs since his move to North London back in 2016, with Janssen bagging just twice in the Premier League last season, one of which was from the penalty spot.

As such, he was shipped out on loan to Fenerbahce back in the summer in a bid to rebuild his confidence and thus re-discover his goal-scoring touch, which he did to begin with in netting twice in his first three games.

However, injuries have thwarted his progress and now it very much remains to be seen what the future holds, but Spurs should consider sticking by the 23-year-old.

Yes, things haven’t gone to plan for Janssen so far, but it’s not through the lack of trying, with the Dutchman always putting a shift in for Pochettino’s side, very much to the delight of the fans.

In fact, the goal he scored in their 4-0 victory over Bournemouth in March of last year generated the biggest cheer of the lot to suggest that the Tottenham faithful want things to work for Janssen, as he has at least shown something despite failing to score many goals.

And at the tender age of 23, the former AZ forward will make improvements and slowly but surely adapt to the Premier League, while young players often do well and improve under Pochettino, with the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Kane prime examples.

Ultimately, Spurs wouldn’t have spent £17 million on Janssen if he wasn’t a good player and a goal-scorer – he bagged 31 goals in 49 games for AZ back in the 2015/16 to suggest that he possesses huge ability.

As such, Tottenham would be mad to let Janssen go less than two years after signing him – he deserves another chance to prove his worth in the 2018/19 campaign.
