The Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Transfer Tavern aren’t quite sure what to make about Toby Alderweireld. Indeed, few would doubt the fact that the Belgian is one of the best in the Premier League, though recent speculation in regards to his future have our local Lilywhites talking.
Following his injury last season, his absence in Mauricio Pochettino’s side was a notable one and a major reason why they were unable to truly challenge Chelsea on their march to the Premier League. However, this time around, the presence of Davison Sanchez alongside Jan Vertonghen has suggested Alderweireld isn’t all that important anymore.
So, as good as the former Atletico Madrid man is, perhaps he could be sold this summer. Indeed, he’s likely to attract big interest considering his form over the last few years and, at 28, perhaps Daniel Levy should take what would be big money and run.
With that in mind, they need to start looking at potential replacements. Having said that, they could do a lot worse than looking at Newcastle United captain, Jamaal Lascelles. The 24-year-old is every inch a natural born leader and has grown into a solid Premier League centre-half while working under Rafa Benitez.
Clearly, the former Nottingham Forest man is not yet a patch on the aforementioned Alderweireld, though the thought of Lascelles backing up – or even forming a central defensive trio with – Jan Vertonghen and Sanchez should be an exciting one.
Rated at just £6.3m by Transfermarkt, Pochettino’s track record when it comes to working with young and English talent would make this a wonderful addition, should Toby depart over the course of the summer.
