Tottenham made Premier League history this summer by becoming the first club to end the transfer window without signing a player since it was created in 2003.
Despite their lack of spending, Tottenham have continued their form from last season, winning their opening two fixtures against Fulham and Newcastle. Tottenham fans will also be glad to see Harry Kane finally break his August curse by netting against the Cottagers at Wembley. They will be hoping his form continues in their toughest test of the season against Manchester United at the weekend.
It remains to be seen whether Spurs’ lack of additions will come back to haunt them this season. Their start has been impressive but competing on multiple fronts puts enormous stress on the squad and Tottenham lack quality options on the bench. Adding one or two players in the summer would have been perfect for the Lilywhites.
One option they should have seriously considered is Marseille playmaker – Dimitri Payet. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, Tottenham fans will remember the Frenchman from his time in the Premier League with West Ham where he was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award in 2016. The Hammers were reportedly offered to the chance to resign their former hero in the summer window with Marseille struggling for funds.
His impressive form continued in France last season – he scored ten goals and picked up 24 assists in all competitions. He was expected to feature in France’s World Cup-winning squad before an injury cut his season short. Payet made a goalscoring start to the new Ligue 1 campaign, picking up a brace in the 4-0 win against Toulouse.
Signing Payet would have lessened the creative burden on Christian Eriksen’s shoulders and give Mauricio Pochettino a valuable rotation option in attacking midfield. His eye for a pass, expert long shots and set-pieces would have helped Tottenham close the gap on Manchester City at the top of the table.
Tottenham fans, would you have signed Dimitri Payet if you had the chance? Let us know!
