Tottenham are reportedly eyeing a move for Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana as a replacement for club captain Hugo Lloris.
According to the Sun, Ajax are not too keen to sell their number one keeper, however, if an offer between £30m-£35m comes in for the Cameroonian international, they could be tempted to sell the 23-year-old player.
Lloris is still out on the recovery table following an injury against Brighton (per BBC Sport) that could see the French World Cup winner out of action until the New Year as reported by ESPN, with Paulo Gazzaniga currently standing in for Spurs’ long-term captain.
With the previously ever-present Lloris sustaining a fairly damaging injury for a goalkeeper, it is understandable as to why Tottenham are taking precaution and seeking for a successor to their number one shot-stopper and one of their most important players, and Onana could be a smart successor to the 32-year-old Spurs star.
As stats from Transfermarkt show, Onana has kept 69 clean sheets across all clean sheets since the 2016/17 season, 19 more than Lloris, who has managed 50 during the same period of time, and with the Cameroon international being nine years younger than the Spurs keeper, the former Barcelona academy star could be a long-term addition for Tottenham.
Indeed, an article written about him over by the analysts at Total Football Analysis, describes the stopper as ‘very good’ with his feet, which could help Spurs given they have used that tactic this season.
Lloris’ injury this season could see the French international return to Spurs slightly worse for ware given the nature of the 32-year-old’s condition, meaning that a move for a new ‘keeper and new number one in the next few months could be the ideal decision for the club going forward.
Onana has proven over the past three seasons that he is ready for a step-up to a big club away from Holland, and Tottenham could be the best destination for the African goalkeeper who has statistically shown that he is more than capable of commanding the position between the sticks.
