Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele is a shock transfer target for Serie A outfit Napoli, according to Italian paper Il Mattino and reported by talkSPORT.
The 26-year-old Belgium international has been an important fixture in Andre Villas-Boas’ Spurs side since his £15 million move from Fulham last year.
And his performances have alerted Napoli boss Rafa Benitez, who has admitted he will be in the January transfer market for a midfielder, full back and centre back.
Spurs are thought to be reluctant to allow the Belgian to leave White Hart Lane in January but Benitez is expected to continue monitoring the midfielder and could approach Villas-Boas with an offer in the New Year.
Napoli’s other transfer targets are thought to be Barcelona star Javier Mascherano and Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva, but Dembele appears to be the more realistic option for Benitez and he could test Spurs’ resolve with a tempting offer regardless of their intentions to sell or not.
Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis has recently admitted that his club will be active in the January transfer window and he is prepared to back Benitez in his attempts to continue Napoli’s title credentials this season.
Dembele has been an ever present for Tottenham so far this season, making 19 appearances in all competitions, and may be reluctant to leave White Hart Lane while he continues to be a regular first team player under Villas-Boas.
Will Dembele’s head be turned by Napoli’s interest or will he continue his development with Tottenham? Let us know your thoughts below.
