Tottenham’s start to the season has been dreadful with last season’s Champions League finalists currently 14th in the Premier League.
Of course, demoralising defeats at the hands of Bayern Munich, Brighton and Colchester United saw Jose Mourinho drafted in to replace Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week in dramatic circumstances.
Obviously, Spurs will need to start picking up points soon, as they face crunch matches with Manchester United and Chelsea in December, with Mourinho surely likely to be under scrutiny given how things ended for him at both of the aforementioned sides.
So how will they line up at the London Stadium?
Paulo Gazzaniga will continue to deputise for Hugo Lloris; the Frenchman will be out until the new year with a gruesome arm injury suffered in the defeat against Brighton. Elsewhere, a slight injury to Jan Vertonghen should mean Davinson Sanchez partners Toby Alderweield in defence, with Ben Davies and Serge Aurier flanking them.
Indeed, the Ivorian has made the second-highest number of interceptions per game (2.6) this season and boasts much more experience than Kyle Walker-Peters in what could be crucial for the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ as he looks to get his tenure off to a flying start in what is generally a competitive London derby.
Further forward, a pivot of Harry Winks and Eric Dier may make sense. There is doubt over Tanguy Ndombele’s fitness (as reported by the club) so pairing the two England internationals at the base of midfield could provide a natural balance. Dier has struggled with injury this season, limiting him to just two starts, but is said to be a player Mourinho rates highly.
Top scorer Harry Kane is an obvious choice up front and the game could be an opportunity for Christian Eriksen to relaunch himself as a Tottenham player. The Dane has struggled for form this season amid a contract dispute at the club but the Mirror recently suggested he’d be open to staying following the managerial change and his 1.4 key passes per game (via WhoScored) is the most of any fit Spurs player this term.
