Tottenham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side go down 1-0 at the Premier League’s bottom side West Brom on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men knew that victory at the Hawthorns at the weekend would put them into a commanding position to seal a top four finish in the Premier League this season, given they were five points clear of fifth place Chelsea prior to kick-off. However, Spurs were unable to get anything from their trip to the Midlands as a Jake Livermore strike in the second minute of added time was enough to clinch all three points for Darren Moore’s team, which coupled with Chelsea’s win over Liverpool on Sunday leaves Pochettino’s side just two points clear of the Blues.
Consequently, there have been many disappointed Tottenham supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can bounce back when they host Newcastle United this evening.
And many of our resident Spurs fans have been speculating upon what changes Pochettino must seek to make against the out-of-form Magpies, with several of the opinion that £25.2 million-rated ace Lucas Moura (as per Transfermarkt) should start at Wembley tonight.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old hasn’t quite featured as regularly as many people were expecting since his January move from Paris Saint-Germain, with the winger earning just ten appearances in all competitions for Spurs, five of which coming in the Premier League.
Yet with Tottenham having won just one of their last four league games, in which time they have managed five goals, many of our resident Spurs supporters are questioning why he isn’t getting the nod ahead of the likes of Erik Lamela, who hasn’t scored since returning from injury, and Son Heung-min, who hasn’t scored since March.
And several feel that it is time for the Brazil international to indeed earn just a second Premier League start against Newcastle this evening, as he has shown in his short time on the pitch for the club so far that he has the sort of attacking intent and directness to make life uncomfortable for the Magpies tonight.
Ultimately, Rafa Benitez’s side have nothing to play for this evening and are likely to make life difficult for Pochettino’s men, which could be ideal for Moura given that defenders have often looked uncomfortable when he seeks to take them on one-on-one.
And with Spurs in need of all three points to keep Champions League qualification in their own hands heading into the final day, the game could be crying out for Moura’s fearlessness and directness to open up a likely well-organised Magpies backline.
As such, the 25-year-old simply has to get the nod at Wembley this evening if Pochettino’s side are to edge nearer to securing a top four finish.
