Signing Tielemans would add greater creativity and offer a different dimension to Mauricio Pochettino’s side
How times change. Just months after being scapegoated for AS Monaco’s horrendous start to the season, Youri Tielemans reminded the footballing world why he was regarded as one of the game’s brightest young prospects. The Belgian took a chance on his career by moving to Leicester in January, and boy did it pay dividends. Indeed, the 22-year-old took the Premier League by storm, and after the departure of Mousa Dembele earlier this year, could be the ready-made replacement Mauricio Pochettino has been craving for at Tottenham.
According to Belgian football journalist Kristof Terreur on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast (via Spurs Web), Tieleman’s agent has ‘held talks with Spurs and Manchester United’, and that Monaco would be willing to sell the midfielder. At the King Power Stadium, Tielemans flourished under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, and formed a formidable midfield partnership with the likes of Wilfred Ndidi and Hamza Choudhury. With defensive protection beside him, the Belgian was given the licence to dictate the play, and almost immediately struck up an understanding with both James Maddison and Jamie Vardy.
And that understanding may just be the exact qualities Spurs need this summer. After Dembele’s exit, Spurs have missed a ball-carrier in midfield, able to drive the team forward, but with an ability to pick out that final pass. With three goals and five assists since his arrival in January, Tielemans showcased all of his talents as a midfield playmaker, capable of adding an end product to his game too.
With Pochettino’s central midfield options limited to Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, Spurs are overwhelmingly short in the creativity department. The reliance on Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli to provide that moment of magic can often be a heavy burden to bear; indeed, in the hard-fought win over Brighton in the closing stages of the season, Pochettino’s men looked devoid of any meaningful ideas, and in the end were rescued by a wonder strike from their Danish superstar.
Having a player like Tielemans who equally seems to have a great knack for timing his runs into the box, and providing 40-yard over-the-top through balls from deeper in midfield, can be a major game-changer for Spurs going forward.
Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the Belgian would represent an archetypal Pochettino signing; young, bags of potential, and the temperament to play for the team and not himself. Whilst Spurs fans might be hoping for ‘bigger and better’ names after reaching a maiden Champions League final, signing Tielemans would be a shrewd acquisition for a side built on rising stars.
