Tottenham’s £25.2m-rated star deserves a rare start against Huddersfield today

The Tottenham fans have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern since their side strolled to a 6-1 victory over Rochdale at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to lift his first trophy at Tottenham Hotspur and simultaneously boost his chances of convincing Harry Kane to stay in North-London were handed a significant boost on Wednesday night as they secured their place in the 6th round of the FA Cup with a victory over Rochdale. Their victory was the second time they needed a replay to see off the challenge of lower league opposition in the FA Cup this season, so the club will certainly be hoping to see off the challenge of Swansea at the first attempt in just over two weeks time.

Next up for Spurs is the visit of Huddersfield in the Premier League, and with a second-leg fixture against Juventus firmly at the forefront of Pochettino’s thinking, he will have some big decisions to make with regards to his team selection today. The performance of Fernando Llorente was one of the standouts in Tottenham white against Rochdale, as he notched a perfect hat-trick inside 12 second half minutes.

However, the Spaniard owed a great deal of his success to the work of Lucas Moura (valued at £25.2 million by Transfermarkt), as the Brazilian provided assists for his first two strikes. Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain, Moura has been used sparingly by Pochettino as he bids to help him build his match fitness after being hung out to dry by Unai Emery in the French capital this season.

Pochettino’s approach has been wise and pragmatic given the circumstances, but as Tottenham’s fixture list begins to pile up, it’s about time that he was handed a starting berth in the Premier League for the very first time today. As Tottenham move into the business end of the season, they will need the entirety of their squad to step in and perform when called upon, but Moura will not be able to reach the standard that is required if he is not match-fit.

Now that he has been given plenty of time to settle and adapt to his new surroundings, the time is right for Pochettino to introduce him to Premier League football, so the Argentine manager must trust his January acquisition with a starting berth against Huddersfield today.
