Spurs fans here in the Tavern are excited about the prospect of welcoming more signings in the summer, but feel like their attentions should be turned to extending the contracts of current stars.
Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino has witnessed an inspired approach from the entire Spurs squad this season, as the ability to overcome the challenges of some of the world’s best is something that’ll compliment the Argentine. And, it now appears that there’s a decision to be made about a certain player’s future at the club, as according to reports in the Guardian, Tottenham have the option to extend Erik Lamela’s contract by a further year.
Should Spurs opt to take up the year extension on the Argentine then this would see him at the club until the summer of 2020, which makes for less of a reason to come to a resolve over a new deal. Indeed, Lamela was brought to North London back in 2013 in what was a previous club-record fee on a four-year-deal, of which the contract involved the option of a further two seasons that the club have since activated, with it now emerging that they have the chance to trigger another year extension on top of that.
But, the Argentine’s time in the English capital has been blighted by injuries, with the hefty price paid for the winger yet to reward Spurs with anything to show for it. Although, his performance in their inspired 2-2 draw against Italian giants Juventus was a breath of fresh air for Pochettino, as it appears that the 25-year-old may finally be finding his feet.
Erik Lamela hasn’t enjoyed the best of times with Tottenham Hotspur, but there’s no question that the Argentine has a special ability. Indeed, triggering an extra year is a better deal to that of rewarding him with a new contract, as seasons filled with injuries haven’t allowed for him to prove he’s deserved of a future with the club.
