Transfer Flashback: Eric Dier

Transfer Flashback: Eric Dier

Tottenham Hotspur fans can be forgiven for writing off Eric Dier when the club signed him back in August 2014. The club have had a lot of transfer flops and the Lilywhites obviously believed that the England man would just be another one of those, although they couldn’t have been more wrong.

Eric Dier joined Tottenham from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon on a five-year deal and whilst the fans didn’t know it at the time, Mauricio Pochettino had pulled off a masterstroke by securing his signature. The Englishman who was born and raised in Portugal was initially deployed as a right-back by Poch but also featured at centre-back throughout the 2014/15 campaign. It was ahead of the 2015/16 season where things changed.

Pochettino obviously saw a leader in Dier and when the 2015/16 season came along the change in Dier was clear to see. On the opening day against Manchester United he was deployed in central midfield and since then he’s been one of the Lilywhites key men in defensive midfield and at centre-back, making himself known as the rock who allowed those around him to shine in attack as Tottenham recorded their highest ever Premier League finish.

Since that move to Tottenham over four years ago, Dier has racked up 36 England caps and scored three goals, including a free-kick against Russia in Euro 2016 and he even bagged the winning penalty for his country against Colombia in the World Cup. He’s also managed over 190 Tottenham appearances and it whilst he comes in for criticism from the fans from time to time, he’s a valued member of the squad who they don’t to see sold.

You can see what Tottenham fans had to say when he signed back in 2014 here:

It’s fair to say that when he signed there was little expectations on Dier, however, he’s shown everyone what he’s made of and will be hoping to make more history at Tottenham.
