Jan Vertonghen’s career at Tottenham could be coming to an end after eight years at the club.
The 32-year-old’s contract is set to expire in the summer and, according to the Evening Standard, Inter Milan are interested in signing him. Taking those eight years into account, Vertonghen has certainly been a great servant, but now looks like a good time for Tottenham to let him go.
His stock is on the decline, with Transfermarkt valuing him at £16.2m, a decrease from his £25.2m valuation last summer. And such a decrease is probably fair given his form in the Premier League this season.
How much is Jan Vertonghen worth?
£15m or more
Less than £15m
At 32, it is unsurprising, but it must be mentioned that the Belgium international is starting to lose a lot of pace, something Sky Sports‘ Charlie Nicholas discussed prior to Tottenham’s Boxing Day win over Brighton.
“Jan Vertonghen is really struggling to deal with pace,” the Arsenal legend said. “If I were Brighton I would get Leandro Trossard on his side and really test him.”
The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, more recently, also spoke about the central defender’s lack of speed and how it is being exploited. For The Athletic, Eccleshare wrote: “Vertonghen was hopelessly exposed by Adama Traore at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and then struggled a week later against the mobility of Mason Mount and a Chelsea wing-back system that looked designed to exploit his lack of pace.”
Undoubtedly, Vertonghen is no longer the player he once was as his market valuation rightly continues to dip. With the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga at disposal, plus the summer transfer window providing Jose Mourinho with the opportunity to sign new players, now may be the time to say goodbye to the former Ajax man.
