Even though victory in El Sackico heaped more pressure onto Mark Hughes and gave Nigel Adkins at least a week of breathing space till rumours surrounding his job appear again, the question mark hanging over his goalkeeping options still seems to be a problem. Kelvin Davies seems to be in the grey margin that few players fall into making them very good in the Championship and not quite good enough for the Premiership.
Artur Boruc was highly regarded at Celtic but after an altercation with some Saints fans he may not have much a future at St Mary’s, although time will tell. The man in goal against QPR on Saturday was Gazzaniga and was totally at fault for Hoilett’s goal in the second half, all he had to do was stand in his goal but instead drifted into no man’s land and gifted the home team a way back into the match.
Considering the defence looked better than it had done in previous weeks Adkins will want to reinforce the one part of the team that needs to be as consistent as Pete Doherty’s drug habit.
So according to the Daily Mail Adkins is looking to a man who played 310 consecutive games in the league, Brad Friedel. The man so old he is more than double the age of Southampton’s most recent starlet Luke Shaw, will be subject to a loan bid in January or so says the tabloid newspaper.
This is a rumour that could be used as an example in a rumour deciphering textbook for something to be taken with a pinch of salt. Friedel was dropped for a big game on Saturday but Andre Villas Boas has already shown significant faith in him by not giving the number one slot straight to French number one Lloris. His form has been outstanding at times this season for Spurs and although a great goalkeeper, it would be hard to see Spurs give up the luxury of having him as back up to Lloris.
January is about 6 weeks away and this is a long time in footballing terms so by then Lloris may have played every game for Spurs and Friedel will be telling the nominee for most David Brent like boss in the Premiership he wants to play first team football. If that is so then Adkins should make a move because Friedel is one of the best in the country in my opinion.
Right now though this is nothing more than idle gossip. Whoever at the Daily Mail came up with this was watching Match of the Day and thought “Southampton need a goalkeeper and Friedel didn’t play a game” followed by a lot of internal cog turning that led to a metaphorical light bulb appeared fully lit.
If Lloris continues to play ahead of Friedel then maybe this is a deal that could happen but until then it is impossible to tell.
