Serge Aurier has been criticised by many Tottenham Hotspur fans for his inconsistent performances recently, with the suggestion being made that they want Juan Foyth to play at right-back.
This comes after a poor run of games from the perspective of both the Ivory Coast international and his team-mates, including the 7-2 loss against Bayern Munich, as well as his sending off against Southampton.
He has also put in some good performances though, with plenty of fans feeling that the 26-year-old was robbed when he wasn’t awarded Man of the Match against Crystal Palace.
While many at Spurs will be frustrated by the result against Watford, they can be satisfied by the performance that Aurier put in, as he had another of his good games.
Aurier put in a good defensive performance for Spurs on Saturday, making 2 successful tackles, 1 clearance, as well as coming out on top in 7 aerial duels, winning more balls in the air than any other player on the pitch, as per WhoScored.
His best defensive contribution came in the form of a brilliant block, which likely denied Roberto Pereyra a goal, when Gerard Deulofeu broke forward and played the ball to the Argentinian, with Aurier recovering with a well-timed challenge to prevent what could have been a devastating goal, as shown in the highlights video on the Sky Sports Football YouTube channel.
In possession, he managed 1 dribble, 1 key pass and 1 shot, while also completing 81% of the passes that he attempted throughout the game.
One good game after a few bad ones will not answer the questions over Aurier’s lack of consistency, but this does offer a reminder that he can be a useful player on his day.
Will this be Mauricio Pochettino's last season at Tottenham?
